Gun Violence and Advocacy

Please join us Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 9:00 AM for the “Gun Violence and Advocacy” Session of the Human Rights Film Festival. Our feature film for this session will be Us Kids, a documentary following the March For Our Lives movement, which was founded by survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida that took 17 lives and impacted many more. The film shares not only these activists’ stories, but how their movement has ignited students around the country to be active and aware of local elections and policy.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion on the impact of gun violence on victims and their families, the importance of gun policy for preventing further tragedies, and possibilities for reform. Leading the panel will be Dr. Jesenia Pizarro, an Associate Professor of ASU in the School of Criminology and a member of Firearm Safety Among Children. Joining us by Zoom will be the Director/Producer of Us Kids, Kim A. Snyder, and Samantha Fuentes, a survivor of the Parkland shooting and current activist; our in-person panelists will be Rep. Jennifer Longdon of Arizona’s 24th District; and Marie Thearle, MD, a leader of the group Moms Demand Action Phoenix chapter.

If you would like to join the session and gain a valuable perspective on gun violence and actions that can be taken to foster change, please RSVP at https://na.eventscloud.com/hrff-2022.
